A former soldier who was deployed to Iraq and Syria and was deployed there to conduct combat operations died of cancer, according to a news release.
Army Col. James B. McCurdy, 63, of Fort Benning, Georgia, was hospitalized Thursday and was expected to survive, according the release from the Georgia Department of Veterans Affairs.
McCurry was deployed as a Combat Support Battalion member to Iraq in 2008 and was based at Camp Bagram, Afghanistan in 2009.
He joined the Army in 1987, and he was discharged in 2010.
He had served in Afghanistan as an intelligence analyst.
McCurdy was a member of the 1st Battalion, 101st Airborne, 4th Infantry Regiment, 442nd Combat Support Group.
He was also a member, along with a colleague, of the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 434th Infantry Division.
McCurry was a combat veteran of Iraq and Vietnam.
